Learn through this fast paced workshop:
Painting on newly created surfaces
Glazing techniques, including transparent and opaque
Personal, exciting and dramatic effects are created using gel-mediums, gesso, papers, and more.
Carving your own personal "stamps"
Creating painted papers for dramatic collages, and additions to your paintings.
You will also be making objects de art using a clay like material to add to your paintings and collages.
Strong emphasis will be placed on self-expression, creativity, and design, design, design.
You also will be using new and fun instruments which will be available at the workshop. You will just love these techniques.
You will learn how to build texture on your support before you paint on it. This will add even more drama and importance to your work.
If you are like me, you have all kinds of supplies. Bring what you have 'cause we may need them!
Acrylic "type" or old brushes - I prefer watercolor brushes from 1 inch flats to 3 inch flats. Your brushes need to be the type that hold liquid, not oil painting brushes.
Large water containers (I mean large as in 1/2 gallon ice cream size)
Acrylic type pallet - trays - just something to put your paint on. Freezer paper works great.
Rags galore
Paper towels
Newspaper or plastic to cover floor in your work area
Alcohol - the rubbing king - 91 proof at least - Walgreen's has this.
Collage papers - anything from paper bags to tissue paper )not the printed or colored tissue papers - they FADE)
Spray Bottles
Pencils - chalk - the kids stuff
Old "unsuccessful" watercolor/acrylic paintings on paper.
White Gesso "I like Jerry's Artarama or Utreach brand of gesso because it has "body" and is great for texturing. You want the type with "body" for creating texture, not the juicy kind. You can get these on-line.
Gel Medium - either matt or gloss - Liqutex Brand is good and available at Hobby Lobby.
Art Crayons, colored pencils, pastels - if you have them.
A small piece of either Speedball or Staedtler Master Carve Artist Carving Block - Available at Hobby Lobby or on-line.
Also bring resource material - pictures of landscapes - abstract paintings, still lifes.
I enjoy working large - so if you have large canvases or want to work "full" sheet or bigger please plan to do so.
Liquitex-soft body acrylic paint -THIS IS IN A JAR NOT A TUBE
Hobby Lobby has small jars of Liquitex and Van Gogh soft body paints. Jerry's Artarama has the larger sizes. Just remember that if you are working big, you will need the larger jars of paint. The primary colors are all you need, unless you already have these "types" of paint in other colors. Bring the colors you like to work with.
Tube acrylic -primary colors - or your favorite colors - as many as you like. Metallics, etc, are fun and interesting. IF YOU HAVE THEM - IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO PURCHASE THESE FOR THE CLASS.
THEGALLERY WRAPPED CANVASES ARE NICE BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HAVE TO BE FRAMED. ANYTHING WORKED ON PAPER OR ILLUSTRATION BOARD SHOULD BE MATTED AND FRAMED UNDER GLASS.
Matt Medium as a glue - Liquitex Brand is good and available at Hobby Lobby.
Scissors and ruler.
I also have many texturing tools to experiment with. But bring anything you can use for texturing.
The first day we will texture our surfaces, Some of these techniques require overnight drying. So have on hand canvases or paper to work on while these are drying.
Also if you have one, bring a small fan to help in the drying of our paintings. Acrylic drys fast, but the fans help speed it up so we can keep working.
Please check my website, category Workshops for updates to the supply list before the workshop.
The first day of the workshop we will use watercolor paper to paint and distress using many techniques to create your own personal papers to make an abstract collage painting. We will also texture surfaces using many techniques.
The second day you will create a totally abstracted painting.
And the third day you will learn to apply paint without the use of a paintbrush.
Please come with an open mind and a "What If" attitude and you leave with the ability to create great abstract/Experimental art.
I can't wait to share with all of you the wonders of experimental, abstract/non-objective painting.
